in an ideal world, packages just compile on any system out-of-the-box…

in the real world, even "standard" c apis are not standard enough, and there are a lot of custom ones… :-/

there are really high hopes, that leopard will make osx more similiar to common *bsd and solaris systems

I wasn't mad, I just really think that one good PM should be enough. ;) OSX might really be a special case, although I'm not sure about it, but even in the Linux world there's just too many. I think that with proper management, one package repository would be enough.

1) what made you so mad?
2) fink is not about managing packages. It's about porting packages to macos-x realities (manging is still made by apt-get and dpkg)

I wish all these package managers died, in favor of one single PM to rule them all. I can only think of one reason which makes this impossible: stubborn developers.
